It took me all the way to Gen VI to get my first shiny. I also had to breed two boxes worth for it, with Masuda method.

This is not counting the boxes upon boxes I bred in Gen V with Masuda+Shiny Charm.

I think it was back in gen 2 when I was ten or something. It wasn't the gyarados but the entei in my crystal was a shiny. I was all "Cool!" and caught it.

You don't need one. Hordes and fishing are both really fast even without it. Horde grinding shouldn't take more than a few hours, fishing can take as low as 20-30 minutes.
