>>21084928They likely kept Charizard's because of the simmilar "Zar" sound, which it's go-to noise when not vocalizing its whole name.
Onix's is monstrous enough to be unintelligible if you don't know what to listen for.
I agree that most of the Japanese voices are better done. That's across the board though, for the entire vocal cast. Their process seems much more conducive to creating quality audio than we've seen and heard about the US studios, that's for certain. Even some of the former US actors have spoken about how jelly they were that the Japanese cast all get together to collectively record in a big open studio room whereas the English dub work is all done separately in the ADR booth.
Now this may be simply due to the studious nature of Japan or perhaps it simply speaks to the directors, but as I understand it there is a large portion of character interaction that's recorded as the actors take turns in a live setting. So instead of individual ADR'd lines you get sections of much more natural feeling dialogue.
They're probably able to get away with this because of the low amount of key frames during slower character-focused scenes. So while it may not look as pretty, it doesn't have that 'soundbyte feel' to it.
