Mike and his team had just finished the fight under the Ruins of Alph, having reached the surface afterward. The cavern below had mostly collapsed, leaving no convenient way to get back to the Cave of Origin. This was bad news for two reasons: one, Mike had no way of knowing where the nearest Pokemon Center was, being unfamiliar with Johto as he was; and two, one of his team was still trapped in Hoenn somewhere. He had a huge decision to make here: should he press on and hope for the best in the upcoming fight, or go back and hope the clown didn't use the extra time to escape?

Well there still was the research building to hole up in, or they could attempt to find out what's causing it, the ruins looked the same as usual except for the damage from earlier, but perhaps there was something, or someone, messing with them.

The grenade seemed to have no effect, only a small fireball shooting out from inside the room, but eventually a scream of pain came from somewhere inside the building, yet strangely enough, not a single person came out of it, it's almost like whoever was inside was unable to get out in the first place.

Either way they'd notice no change in their surroundings, though for a moment one who had good hearing would hear what sounded like an amused cackle coming from somewhere.

The hit eventually blew the door open and in the process also blew half the flame out of the burning windows. The smoke inside cleared enough fro them to get a good view from inside the doorway. The view showed what looked like the typical research station, the now mostly melted computers and burned desks looking scattered across the floor from the wind gusts, but other than that unless they were around the corner there didn't appear to be anyone inside.

Most of the flames had died down luckily for the group, it just left a cover of thick smoke hanging over their heads.

The Absol's attempt to check the inside of the building for danger came back clean, if there was a trap the mage must have burned it out.

And it seems that might have not been too far off, while there was one clearly dead guard who had apparently been hit dead center with the grenade, leaving not much left to identify just who it was, there were also what looked like a pair of scientists collapsed against the wall, having scooted themselves away from the flames despite being bound, both of them looked in bad shape.

The frozen, long-abandoned hallways of Silph Antarctica. Inside them, a single man wanders, searching through the cold-storage rooms for his quarry. He knew the rooms, and could recite the contents of each room by heart, but none of them contained the prize he sought, for what he was seeking was not on any record.

There it was, partially covered with ice from a broken wall panel, but it was there. The unmarked room, the treasure trove. And inside?

Six of them stood, shoulder-to-shoulder in massive docking bays. The god warriors, each preserved perfectly from the ice. Every servo and motor, ever piston, every inch of copper wiring, completely intact. But they were not his prize.

There was a long container, approximately ten feet long. It was cold, and frozen condensation had partially obscured the labels. What could be read said "DNA sample DS-001. Viral sample extremely virulent, do not open outside of a Level 4 biohazard lab." A small glass port had not been completely frozen over, and inside, a fraction of something could be seen. It was clear red, and moving. But it was not his prize.

The man's prize was a small, unassuming metal briefcase. The Silph logo was tampographed on the top, accompanied by a red label reading "O-27". This was his prize.

With all due care, he took the briefcase in his left hand, and with his right reached into his pocket, producing a cell phone. He dialed, muttering "come on, pick up you bastard" as it rang.

A convoy of armored vehicles ferried the man and his precious cargo to their destination, high in the reaches of the Sinjoh mountains. Most were desert tan MRAPs pilfered from ex-Plasma-American warehouses, but not the lead vehicle. The lead vehicle was a German SDKFZ 251, coloured German grey, with a snow-white tarp covering the rear hold. Unlike the pilfered MRAPs, the SDKFZ was from the private collection of the man in question.

The convoy came to a stop, having arrived at base camp. The rear door swung open, and the man in question stepped out, his boots crunching against the snow. His black leather, knee-high boots slipped over his grey woolen pants, keeping the snow from piercing his legs. Atop his shoulders was a black leather coat with a fur-lined collar. A grey scarf wrapped itself around his neck, blowing in the icy wind, and atop his head was a grey peaked cap topped with silver-rimmed aviator shades. he looked less like a German officer, and more like a fashion designer's attempt to turn Gen. MacArthur into a German officer. In his gloved hand, he held the briefcase O-27.

The vessel's second occupant looked much more the part- She, a girl of only fourteen, was decked in a long black overcoat, with a black leather Sam Browne belt crossing her chest and shoulder. Knee-high black leather boots and a crimson ribbon in her shoulder-length ebony hair completed the ensemble.

The man? Colonel Hans Lübeck. A former munitions procurement officer for the Bundeswehr when it had been the arm of Silph.

The girl? Emiko Lübeck, the German-Japanese daughter of the Colonel, and his everpresent companion since the death of her mother.

On the heels of the first two occupants came a third, a tall man with sharply chiseled features and eyes that, while not beady, were almost always narrowed into slits that peered into every nook, cranny, and shadow around. The figuring was clad in a set of featureless, drab-grey fatigues that seemed to to share the same color code as the craggy rock peaks, that is, where they were fortunate enough to poke up through the omnipresent cloak of snow. A warm coat was securely drawn over his frame along with a matching pair of dark boots to protect the feet from the biting snow and slush below, which crinkled and crunched in protest at each footfall he made. Wearing no cap nor scarf exposed much of the man, known as Erco, to the frigid air, but his stony expression showed no discomfort at the temperature. Where he had come from, he had experienced worse than Japan could ever offer, far worse.

As he turned to shut the door of the halftrack behind himself and his charges, a machinegun that looked more like it belonged in a museum than in a soldier's hands could be viewed slung across the back. A careful eye could pick out that the piece had been lovingly cared for, and it showed not a hint of time's ravages anywhere along the polished, steel frame or woodwork.

A hand dipped into the breast pocket of his coat and produced a pair of tinted shades which were quickly settled onto the bridge of the nose to deaden the sun's glare. All the preparation he required having been met, he fell into step beside the man and women, casting a casual glance at the row of vehicles behind. The figure seemed rather forgettable next to the other two, blending into the background beside the more extravagantly dressed duo.

The men were greeted by a pair of soldiers garbed in a unform of the Waffen SS, the two men holding the hardened look of well trained professionals who stared at the newcomers as if to silently size them up. "We were waiting for you, I assume the Major briefed you on everything?"

The Ancient Egyptian Cellphone Network indicated the signal Bakura sought was somewhere in Johto, but the signal being weak it was difficult to track. From the looks of it the phone was probably underground in the area near the Lake of Rage.

The two heavy doors swung open from the inside as he began to lead them in, the mountain sky soon being replaced by a gloomy glow from the the dusty windows as they stepped in, the vast antechamber opening up to them as they walked in.

The place was clearly ancient and long forgotten by the mists of time, the chamber echoing with their footsteps as they walked in. "The only person you have to meet now is the Clown," said the guard with an uneasy air, "he is a very strange man to say the least, there are others who are just as strange but the Clown is in a category of his very own."

In favor of letting the the two parties speak, Erco fell silent and took in the change of scenery that followed as they were lead into the bowels of a mountain both majestic and ancient. The place had an unsettling air about it, foreboding one might say, and that was only magnified by the terse conversation about who they were to meet.

Pursuant to the guard's warning, careful consideration was taken to where he stepped. Though he wasn't sure if that "artwork" comment was to be taken literally or not, their last few missions had given him enough cause to not doubt anything when dealing with these "strange" types.

The guide began to carefully lead them around towards the chambers behind the guide continuing to answer the questions as they came. They eventually reached the far walls and the other smaller doors the guard giving them a look of caution."

Deitiker could look and spot that the floor itself seemed to have been painted in a large series of ruin like designs which seemed to circle towards the center of the room. The entire shape looked like some form of ancient ritual circle who's purpose was long forgotten.

The difference was that it appeared that the clown had begun adding his own touch to the circles, drawing various lines and runes between and around them to cause each circle to intersect with one another. The entire thing seemed almost random but the series of lines and circles would make him dizzy if he stared at it too long.

The guard would knock on the inner door before opening it and waving for them to come in. "I can not follow you in there, I wish you luck."

The halls, long ago carved from the rock of Sinjoh, held in them a clammy air. To the back of the party, fresh air from the cold outside could vaguely be felt, but the cold chill only served to make the halls more uncomfortable. Emiko stuck close to her father, partly (the only part she would later admit to) to steal his warmth, and partly (the part she would never admit to) because she was afraid of the dank corridors.

Though it was not obvious, Hans too was afraid. His job had taken him to many strange places before- Underground bunkers, mountain holds filled with terrorists and rebels, desert camps in hellish Africa, jungle hideaways in the Pacific islands; but nothing quite like this place. The air stank of death, and the sparse light provided by the torches on the wall only served to heighten the sense of claustrophobia that he was sure would come on if he stayed any longer. The hard leather soles of his boots made audible 'clicks' against the brick floor, and focusing on the noise was the only distraction from the encroaching dread that seemed to swirl in the stone hallway. His guide spoke to him, speaking of the clown that Hans was soon to meet, but the guard's words seemed to disappear in the darkness as soon as they ventured from his mouth.

Presently, the party came to a far wall, almost encircled by doors guarded by armed men. The guards shot momentary looks at the party, before returning their gaze to the nothingness of the hallway.

"Do not let his appearance or his behavior trick you though, he is a very dangerous man with powers beyond our understanding." said a guard, but Hans paid no attention to which guard had spoken to him.

The floor below was covered in strange markings, circles and runic patterns of unknown origin dotted the brick, making shapes that seemed to confuse the mind, and Hans took care not to step on any, lest he incur the wrath of the strange man in the next room.

One of the guards knocked on the door before the party, letting the man inside know that his honored guests had arrived. Hans motioned for Emiko to stay with Erco, as he ventured in alone.

"Hello?" he called, as the darkness within the room threatened to swallow the dim embers of his lit cigar "I am Colonel Hans Lübeck, and I was instructed to see you, on the orders of our mutual friend."

Hans was unsure if 'mutual friend' properly described the man he now took orders from, but he reasoned it would have to suffice for now. "I am lead to believe that you have a task for me, ja?"

The unusual markings on the floor drew the towering soldier's eye, though it did little to draw the mind off the unusual environment. Whatever he felt, he did not show, and while he listened to the guard's speak his attention was more focused on the mosaic detailing the floor and the odd patterns they made. He quickly shook his head to clear the mind of the maddening shapes, they clearly were the work of a strange, if not diseased, psyche, and he could not fathom what they all meant.

Erco stood silently before the door that brought their not-so-pleasant walk to an end, shooting Hans a sidelong glance before he took the plunge into the darkened chambered that loomed just beyond, where even the guards would not go. It went without saying he would be right here if needed, but for the time being he stayed put to keep an eye on his daughter as ordered.

The room beyond was lit up with a dim glow from the various lights that had been placed in the places torches once hung, the room smelled of soot, decay, and a hint of ancient incense.

The room itself at one point had to have been some sort of dining hall or meeting room, a long wide stone table sat in the middle of the room, the sides of it lined with similarly quarried stone benches and from what seemed to have once been places for chairs. The sides of the room opened up into other quarters which seemed ot also glow from the faint artificial light which attempted to force back the encroaching darkness that seemed to surround him.

As he took notice of the room he would spot the one other source of light in the room, a large roaring fire that seemed to come from the other side of the room. In the harsh light of the flame he could make out a figure standing before it, the man turning away from the fire when he heard the Colonel's announcement.

"Oh?" He said as he turned to face him, his face white as death in the glow of the flames. "Oh him! Oh yes... yes I've been waiting for you," he said with a high pitched tone which made him sound almost disturbed. "Well then come in come in!" He said before jumping up and walking onto the Table. "I was so wondering who our dear friend would send us!"

The bodyguard strode into the central chamber at a snappy pace once he was called for, careful of his footing to mind the work done on the floor, but otherwise undaunted at the odd setting that was laid out before him. Light from both fire and artificial sources danced across the concave, mirrored lenses he wore. Other than a brief detour to remove those, useless as they were inside, his gloved hands fell to his hips at the ready. There were no telltale bulges at the waist to indicate the presence of weapons, but who could say if that was merely a show of his own?

Erco looked first to his friend, and then to the clown. Whatever he was expecting, Kefka was not it, but he'd seen enough strangeness in their last few missions to remain unmoved by the deranged character. It was, after all, not the first lunatic they had been sent to make contact with. At the back of his mind he hoped that it would be the last.

Regardless, he offered little more than an uninterested look to the garishly dressed magician. Rather, he peered around the chamber and towards the rooms beyond, as if still trying to piece together what arcane purpose all of this was meant to serve. "Then I am glad we are agreed on these terms" Hans said as his bodyguard entered.

Emiko was the last of the three to enter, sneaking in behind Erco to join him and her father. Stepping cautiously, she positioned herself- As close to her father as possible, but at the same time, as far from the clown as possible. She stood as if on the edge of a knife, unsettled by the man before her.

Hans could sense his daughter's ill ease. Since her mother's death four years ago, she had been by his side on nearly every mission the men had seen. She had seen horrors no young girl should ever have to bear witness, but she insisted on staying by his side. But this man, Hans could tell, was no ordinary man. There was an aura about him that radiated danger, and he made a mental note to keep his daughter as far away from this man as he could, for whatever that meant in the confines of this mountain base.

"We are all here now" said Hans to Kefka. "as you asked. We can begin a more thorough briefing whenever you are ready."

After the girl slipped into the room Erco allowed himself a little more space to roam, taking a couple of steps towards the stone table that Kefka was now seated at after his little display. He made no move to sit, much preferring the quicker reaction afforded by standing.

"Hmm..."

Abruptly, Deitiker slammed the back of his fist into the cold, rock tabletop with a resounding *wham!* that may or may not have echoed through the the chilly air in the empty chamber. Hairline fractures formed outwards from a dent in the stone around his knuckles, almost as if mimicking the ritualistic carvings on the floor beneath its legs. One would expect a grimace, but Erco just gave another of his wry, lopsided grins.

"I see what you mean, the place looks ready to crumble." He casually remarked, splaying his fingers and examining the back of his hand before tucking his thumbs into the edges of the pockets on his coat.

Having made a point in doing that, he nodded in affirmation to the Colonel's words, himself eager to get the briefing underway.

A raised eyebrow was all that could be mustered at first, uncertain if that entire thing was meant to be another joke. The silence and lack of punchline seemed to denote otherwise.

He flipped the board over so that the entire large list of pokemon could be revealed, the board listed every legendary that had been known to be located in the region of Japan from Mew all the way to Arceus. "These are the ones we have!" The man pointed along the list of each legendary and how each one was checked out one by one, "And we only have these ones left!"

Kefka pointed to the names of the weather trio, "We have the orbs of them, but the pokemon themselves are hiding with those blasted idiots called Rocket!"

He grumbled insults under his breath as he moved on to the other names. "But we don't need them if the orbs work out, all we need..." he pointed to the last names, "Is this one, Mew... and the bigger one." He said pointing to Mewtwo like it wasn't important.

Breaking the news to Emiko had been... Hard, to say the least. Until now, that had been the last time that Hans had set foot in Japan.

Hans had made up his mind. This would be the last mission he ever took. Once this was over and the clown got what he wanted, he and Emiko would return home, where he would be free to live out a peaceful retirement, and she would be free to be a little girl again.

He waited for them to pick it up, the device appearing to be some form of scanner. "But the Mew, we know exactly where it is." He looked almost gleeful. "The person who has the Mew is trying to come to this very place to try and stop me!"

The colonel and his daughter were allowed to leave first, with Erco taking his leave last after casting one final glance towards the keepers of these ruins. Once they were free of the ritual chamber, though, he stepped back into stride beside the family. The tall man rolled his shoulders, as if he were Atlas, and he had just freed himself of a burden placed upon them.

"I'm more tempted to say 'insane'." Erco offered in return, being much more direct in his opinions on the matter, as he was wont to do. "But if that drawing is truthful, they've done it before a dozen times."

A lone car could be seen driving slowly and purposefully down the long, winding, paved driveway of a certain mansion, whose location was better left unsaid. "Come on." The older of the two said with a faint accent, motioning with one hand while the other moved to open the door into the mansion proper. His partner obediently stepped into line behind him as they round the parlor and made their way up a set of stairs.

The eastern wing, the girl's private area. The younger man gave an impressed whistle at the decor, earning him a sidelong glare from the other. That brought him to silence.

The final room on the left was their objective, and the young man slid a key into the lock and gave it a sharp turn, nudging the door carefully with his shoulder and pausing...as if expecting resistance. The two shared a shrug before the door was gently tossed open to allow the pair entry.
