Fun Fact: The reason Ash's Swellow used his Aerial Ace as a counter move sometimes is because of the inspiration of the move. It's japanese name is "Tsubame Gaeshi", which translates as "Swallow Counter/Reversal/Return", it is a sword technique used irl that consists of a slash downwards followed by an upwards (like the Aerial Ace animation in XY)

Ash uses his birds and Pikachu, but because of his overconfidence fails to train or prepare against Ramos and his strategy. He goes on a defensive where he traps the pokemon and then slowly take away their energy, forcing Ash to use Pikachu early.
Even shoujo power can't save him because Serena and Bonnie aren't there with him because Serena got mad at Ash (not in a bitchy kind of way, kinda like a disappointed kind of way because of his overconfidence), and Bonnie followed her.
Ash gets wrecked and is lectured by Ramos about some life lesson. In the end, Ash asks Serena forgiveness and to his Pokemon as well, and later spends the entire next episode training.
The next episode goes smoothingly well with Ash until out of fucking nowhere Ramos has a Mega Venusaur, and all his birds have been defeated!
