Ayy I like it. Looks fun. There's like a whole part to the middle-right that you're not using though. I agree that not every tile has to be used but if you're expending the dataspace to have the map that big you might as well not waste it.

Download Advanced Map and load a ROM into it. Emerald has the best tilesets but it's probably the hardest GBA game to hack so if you just want to make maps use that one.

I guess I can post. This is something I made literal years ago now. I wish I could have the time and energy to be able to devote myself to all of my hobbies instead of just never getting any of them done.

I think that Tiled Map Editor would work fine for you. It uses layers (as many as you wish, actually) and allows tiles of different sizes. It is free and kind of user-friendly too.

Luckily, yes. It can export png files pretty easily. No rom file gets involved, Tiled is just for the sake of tile-based maps. And it does really well!

I remember these. A guy wanted to do a super realistic romhack for Pokemon, make massive routes and cities. I saw some of the other ones too, his Viridian Forest and Pallet Town were GOAT. Only got to about Cerulean city before quitting. It's a shame too, I would have loved to play something like this. Like an immersively realistic Pokemon RPG

I do and don't want this. On the one hand, it'd be really cool to do a lot more exploring and possibly space out the enemy trainers instead of possibly squishing them in; it'd make it seem more "real."

On the other hand, though, like you said, you have to /resize/ the map - it might be really annoying to take so long before getting to a rest stop, especially before getting Fly. It'd probably be tough on the hardware to handle it, and it'd be equally tough to design it - as you said, the guy /quit/ doing this, presumably at least partially out of it being tedious to do. I'm all for them spending more time on making a quality game, but it begs the question of whether it'd be worth it.

Most of his ideas for gamplay were dumb, but I always admired his scope with mapping. Of course with great scope comes great unlikeliness to ever finish a project.

Also, I actually remade his Route 1 in RPGMaker/Essentials and they really didn't take long to traverse; the criticisms about it being too big were mostly unfounded. It would have definitely made for a great game.

The long-ass routes are alright, but giant cities like this get my dick hard. I don't even care if they're pretty empty, the one thing I've always disliked about pokemon was that towns are either 3 houses or Lumiose/Castellia style 2big4me. Very few in the games have straddled that line well (Lilycove and Goldenrod, to name a couple).

Wut. I only ever found his Route 1-3, Pallet, and some sketches. If he actually has a significant amount done, we (I) can recreate them, fill in the gaps with other cities, and at least get 1 region of his original vision playable.

Romhack couldn't handle it. It would either have to be RPGMaker/Essentials or use a new engine. Even RPG maker has some problems with McHuge maps.

The main issue with pokemon fangames is the autism is takes to make a whole game yourself and good taste rarely combine. So you get shit like Flora Sky with generic regions and Legend spam stories.

Ideally (for me) the ultimate fan game would have
1. Huge maps - often made to be as labirithin as possible
2. Minimal story
3. Emphasis on exploration and Gotta Catch em All instead
4. Good fakemons so there is more to discover and you are not just retreading GF's mons.

Most are because the people who make them tend to be terrible at it and have massive creative bankruptcy. But if done right I feel like they would be necessary for a perfect game. The worst part of Gen 6 is the >70 new mons. It feels like too much of a retread of past games. I can usually get over bad designs if the stats and stuff are fun. I usually end up doing randomizers as a compromise.

I always had a dream of a city that was basically set up like a city wide Silph co. style dungeon/maze. Buildings with shared walls might have a hole in them so you can go from one to the other. Underground tunnels might connect others. Or even a couple teleports send you to others. Some would have locked entrances and can only be entered by find a secret entrance from another building. So you could enter any building separately, but only 1 building was the "true" entrance (similar to Whirl Islands) where you could get to the villain boss or whatever was the objective of the city.

Meh it doesn't matter on something like Essentials/RPGMaker. A tile is a tile. It is the size of the maps and number of events that affects lag. So you keep trainers to a minimum (give them full teams to make up for it) and other fancy shit and just stick to basics.

On RPGMaker it wouldn't make a difference because you're running something that lets you listen to music, watch videos, and post on 4chan at the same time. On a Gameboy Advance every byte counts, especially since it has to keep those extra trees in the memory while it only has to keep 1 or 2 tiles in memory for the edge tiles.

This shit isn't going to be on Gameboy Advance. Each of these maps is bigger than the biggest one made in Hoenn, most of them 5+ times those. So no matter how you split them up, a whole region would never fit. Still, even RPGMaker has some problems with these big maps, so optimization is always necessary.

The map itself isn't too out of the ordinary for RPG Maker. What makes it look so good is the tiles, which are obviously custom-made and don't come with the program.

If you can find the tileset he used, you could easily make something like it. Hell, that image is so high quality you could probably use it to create your own tileset.

I hope you guys realize that if you actually played on this map your screen would be nothing but path most of the time.
There are several spots where, if you were to stand in them, your screen would be almost entirely grass. Just grass.
The scale of it is fine, but they need to actually put something in the spaces if they want to pull it off. Just spreading everything out and making things big does not a good map make./

I have been in countless threads of people with sometimes actually neat ideas of romhacks that never get finished because the guy either doesn't know how to actually program anything or just gets bored and drops it after the first gym.

Thank god. Gen 3 was nice but gen 4 and 5 had pretty shit graphics. While it wasn't the worst decision on their part, it looks like Doom with that mix of basic 3D and billboarded sprites.

Workin' on my romhack again; this is the current version of what is essentially Route 1. The left path leads from the starting town above to a forest that brings you to the first Gym's town, and all that stuff on the right is an island that's accessible through that cave from the starting town for the introductory storyline.

My worry right now is that I don't need these two locations to be in the same area, and that I should split them up into two maps. Thoughts on this, or the map in general?

It's just going to have basic directions, saying South is to Zapling Woods and Tealyte Town, and right is to... Bayblue Cove? Bayblue Islet? I dunno what to call it yet.

But yeah, the starting town (as pictured) is Bayblue, and in a moment I want to show off a mechanic I'm implementing into this hack...

So as >>21162804 is the front of Bayblue, by going out the back door of your house, you arrive here, which is simply the back side of the town (the cave leads to the one first pictured). I hope to have this feature show up in various locations and be involved with puzzles.

Yeah, it's supposed to be a private villa summer home thing for the main character's family, hence the seclusion. The rival lives in the smaller house. But thanks for the compliment, hahah. Perhaps I'll change the name from "Town" to "Cape" or something.

BYOND has no issue with maps like this, the problem is BYOND is only used for unfinished RPGs and shitty animu games. Of course to really reduce lag with huge maps is to turn off networking so the game can't be multiplayer
