The problem here is that nobody know how to effectively utilize collaboration skills.

Every design needs to receive constructive feedback if you ever expect to stop getting so many crap pokemon.

On the flipside, artists need to stop taking feedback as personal attacks and be willing to draft and re-draft many times. Design is an iterative process and it will take many tries to get a working design out of any concept.

Both critics and artists need to work together otherwise this project will never get anywhere. If nobody care about ever getting done, then there is no point for anyone to be here anyways, so we might as well work together.

Lets try and make this thread a productive one.

I like it a lot better when it's not a starter, and I feel like we could do a lot more with it now that the restrictions starters have are gone. Scrap the magic girl stuff (especially the tail), and incorporate more imp/gremlin features.

HELLO POKEAUS I am here to complicate the grass starter situation hello.

This is a dolphin grass starter. (just an edit of a dolphin I saw posted here)

This follows the ""pattern"" set by gamefreak with the grass starters, in that they're all progressions that tie into era's in which the animals they are based on were dominant in.

Eg, bulbasaur is a synapsid, they were before sauropods (chickorita) which were before theropods (trecko) which were before turtles (turtwig) which were before snakes (snivy) which dominated before small mammals (chespin) which dominated before birds (sages shitmon). After that there isn't a whole bunch, but mammals did return to the sea then. So here we are with a dolphin that's kinda based on early dolphins (had legs).

Thoughts?

Submitted a similar version of this two threads ago. I've looked through the Dropbox and picked some designs/concepts that both appeal to me and fit under the categories of what we need for the region (common rodent/bird/bug/etc, fossils, pikaclone).

I should mention that this dex is to mainly show where we are at with ideas and concepts and does not imply that any of the designs are finalised and 'official' (except for poppy nurse and squids of course).

For the fossils, I saw someone's sketch of a rock/grass sloth line based on the giant sloth and mushrooms. I thought it would be a nice counterpart to the speedy poison raptor the has been suggested.

I'd get rid of the leaves around the end of the tail, or at least make them less interesting. The tail is pretty much the centerpiece of the design, and I understood that when it was going down the magical girl line, but now it's just unnecessary.

The reason why I gave it the spikes was because muay thai is the "art of eight limbs" and I wanted to try and tie in that idea with the design.

It seems you went through a little when making these designs but they look hideous. The bat's eyes are going off of its head and aren't the same size, and neither are the wings. Both line's color schemes are a strange mishmash of bright orange and burgundy. Fitting for a Fire-type I guess, but not appealing or inspired. What is that final evo's nose attached to? And thanks to its head shape it looks like a flying donkey.

Also, you need to find a way to scale images better. The second iteration of the bat is blurry for some reason.

I should clarify that signature abilities are removed from the first draft. The second one will probably have Illusion.

It's why Impostor (Ditto line) isn't on the list despite making thematic sense, and Protean (Kecleon and Greninja lines) are.

I think the raptors need a totally different look. If you look at Tyrunt and Cranidos, you'll see they're very simplistic with basic shapes. I think the one I drew could go further, but it might be a new start.

I like this version the best because of the springs on it's head. The original didn't really incorporate enough "bed" into its design. Perhaps there can be more bed related features on it, like the texture of a mattress or some bed-knob shaped appendages.

Leavanny: Offensive pokemon with little coverage, 92 speed (lol) and a rare case of "gen VI made my HA entirely redundant". Only notable for sticky web support, even then it's outclassed by enough pokemon that it's in PU.

Parasect: Swap sticky web for spore, remove 70 speed. This is the reality of the shitmon that is parasect.

Candidate for literally the worst pokemon in my opinion. Klefki has similar bulk, superior typing (the best even), great ability, passable movepool. Like seriously, why do they make bugs so fucking bad.

Bug/grass is interesting because it's a clash between arguably the two best support types in the game bar none.

Baton pass (nearly every bug has this), batshit insane boosting moves (most have swords dance, quiver dance and tail glow exist, not that this would get those), Sticky webs, u turn and quite often, spikes.

Imagine a pokemon that runs Sleep powder/Spikes/Sticky web/U turn. No pokemon has that combo currently. Give it at least 100 attack and she'll be apples. Then it could probably run swords dance/x scissor/baton pass/knock off or earthquake. Slap a salac berry or a sash on it and man you got yourself a sweeper with an escape plan. Lack of a gale wings hotwings would only help that, since it resists: aqua jet, mach punch, vacuum wave.

People that think grass/bug is shit aren't thinking of the movepool that could bring.

Really liking this. It's got some interesting detailing without coing overboard.The proportions are nice and it's got some unique shapes in the arms and legs that works well. I can already imagine how it moves which is a big plus!

I love this interpretation. I thought my own were way too elongated and too ovular, so the circle-segmented body shape here is pretty good.

changed it a lil to suit how i envisioned it. i'm not really big fan of the dark eyes thing, its menacing but i dont think it fits. other than that i just chucked on the colours i wanted and tried to apply the armor theme more, as the pokemon is based less on actual samurais but more on the armor itself.

i guess it's up to whether people like it now or not

The problem I have with it is all the segments in the armor.I know that's how samurai armor is, but it just makes the design look really busy. Pokemon designs usually simplify things and make them seem a little more natural

The final form and Scabut look amazing. Not only do they work well as pokemon, I feel they could fit as robots in a Megaman game.

Seeing as I think the first and final stage is fine I should probably shed some light on what does and doesn't work for the mid-stage for me personally:

The legs look too spindly and don't seem like they would be able to support the weigh of it's heavier body.
The brownish flap over it's shoulder looks out of place, I feel it would work better if you just cut out that shape, and instead applied it's color to the first half of the brown-red shell.

I'm not sold on the mouth, it could be that it's just the off proportions in the work in general that is working against it in that regard. I'd like to see it drawn much cleaner than it is there as it overall just seems like a rushed job. (Lines on the underbelly don't follow the shape, the horn ornament has a wacky angle and size difference, etc.)

fair enough, the shoulder flap was intended to develop into some sort of shoulder piece but i dropped that idea and just havent bothered to repair the initial drawing.

also i get what you mean about a few things being slightly off, but considering it's something i did in paint, and i was certain that if i post it, i'm going to have to edit or redraft parts of it's body. its more convenient for me to be a little lax where things like that are concerned. im not sure what you mean about the mouth but feel free to draw one on in paint or something so i can see what you mean.

Unfortunately this project's been off to, not mincing words, an awful start. The surveys are improving and some dedicated people are getting some shit together, but we're only at three confirmed Pokemon so far and haven't had a major confirmation survey in some time. Although there is the current survey which was built to do so.

I could say we're going somewhere, but this project will really need that extra push.

I think that Bug/Fighting would work the best. Samurai are known to be honorfags, so the dirty fighting of a dark type would not really fit with that pokemon's theme. And how can Masamushi not have Hammer Arm with arms like those?

Battle Armor seems like it would be a fitting ability for it. Possibly justified as well. With a bug/fighting typing it would be the bane of all dark types.

I completely agree. If anything getting designs designs that never got to see the light of day means we'll get designs that people put a lot of love into and give them a chance to live in a game sometime in the future.

Also, a lot of the ideas I put forwards are old ideas of mine that I work around into fitting into the region just a little bit more.

A Pokemon created before this project means that it was not created for this project. It was something that someone made elsewhere that they want to draw attention to. It screams attention-whore, and it also means that the project would be full of things that don't really rightfully belong in it. Anything in this project should be created for this project. Otherwise there stands no point in trying to design new stuff, just find an artist who has lots of work and use all of their stuff.

Rustic pokemon, pokemon set in postwar Australia (world war one that is) Australia's men (something like 1/3 men, pretty significant) are returning from the great tussle after a very bittersweet 'victory'. Electricity is only really a thing in town centres, in one building. Maybe a few more in the big cities. But hey, vidja, you don't have to experience how shitty that is firsthand. Instead it's kinda comfy.

Or maybe pre federation times. Villian team is the corrupt gov (fuck poms) and an overly aggressive rebellion (peter lalor isn't exactly the paragon of democracy)

I dunno, seems like it would be cooler than a modern australia.

It's an anxious first stage, anti-predator. Becomes more confident but still quick to scare in stage 2, and finally fierce predator in stage 3.

Back legs and tail need to look like they can support that weight a bit better.

And the single triangle on the head is a little, well, it's like a little hat. I'd also keep what the back spines looked like originally.
