I don't think you get what I mean

by "nothing" I mean that's the basic type, the type that's given to Pokemon that have no defining characteristics with existing types. that's why it has no resistances and isn't super effective against anything. so it makes sense that the only Pokemon that have had its type removed so far have been Normal types

I don't that they should retype it, but l think that an alternate form would be the best option to make it Grass/Fairy.
Give it a shrine in Petalburg Forest or on a new island, or give it a key item like they did for Shaymin.

i think GF just doesn't want to change the typing of legendaries, so the best we can hope for are new alternate forms

but in the case of celebi, being psychic doesn't define it in any other way other than competitive (stab in psychic moves and has weakness to ghost, dark and bug). look at that thing and tell me it's a genuine psychic type. it has nothing that makes me even remotely remind myself of it. but yeah alternate form grass/fairy celebi would be great

Pretty much half of the legendaries ever released should logically be fairy type. (Celebi, Jirachi, Elf Trio, ect.) Gamefreak isn't going to retroactively change them because there would be too many.

if it was made today im sure it would be fairy, as well as a bunch of other legends, but as i said before, i think that because it is legendary they won't change the typing. I really don't think GF cares about the competitive aspects of the event legendaries as most of the time you're not allowed to use them. Either way, i don't know why you keep insisting on the competitive aspect when that's clearly not what's being discussed

not really. defining characteristics are obvious parts of a Pokemon's design eg. if it can swim it's a water type, if it has flames it's a fire type, if it's made of steel, it's a steel type.

We can agree:
It looks like a Fairy.
It's connection to forests and magic give it great Fairy qualities.
Not all Pokémon with time/precognition should be Fairy type. The Psychic typing is validated for most of them.
Dialga rules time and needs neither Fairy nor Psychic typing for its mastery of time.
Celebi would benefit from Fairy Typing and we would accept an alternate form; maybe called something like Nature Form.

The point was that Dark is immune to psychic and weak to Fairy, which is immune to dragon, thus "one immunity + one weakness" duality.

As it is, though, they both have an immunity to Zygarde so it still works

Therefore, Dialga cant do much to Palkia and while its Steel doesnt resist Palkia's water, it does balance it against Palkia's dragon, and Giratina and Giratina both have 2 SE STABs against ... er, herself.
And then Arceus is any type and can be immune to Ghost or Dragon at will (in anime canon) or just resist/SE them as it pleases.

I'd say Gen 4 did it right, too.
Hell Fire/Elec are both resisted by dragon and dragon's weak to ice and theyre all weak to dragon so gen 5 did too. Gen 3 is the only one to fuck it up. Thats why Lugia's not Water/Flying, though if it was both birds would have a x4 weakness

The normal type is a jack of all trades type. They usually have an array of moves that cover a wide variety of abilities like blissey and tauros, or they have a unique niche like keckeon or helioptile. It also represents living organisms.
Being weak to fighting and immune to ghost are traits of things that are based on already sentient things.
Normal type is as much of a type as bug, ghost, dragon, fairy, or fighting.
