So I see Emerald quite often topping "best pokemon game" tier lists and HG/SS get a lot of praise as well, but how do you guys think about Fire Red and Leaf Green?

Were they successful remakes in your eyes? I personally loved Leaf Green and it's my favorite Gen 3 game. The Sevii Islands were a very welcome feature that made the postgame very enjoyable. The only thing that sucked was breeding being postgame only.

As someone who started with Gen 1, I enjoy what you guys are describing as blandness in these games.

The lack of flashy features and over-the-top story elements really lets you get lost in the fantasy of the game. It gives you time to think and imagine and build your own ideas about the world you're adventuring in.

You may not agree, but its part of the why I love these games, and Pokemon in general. And TBH, most of the features and elements that were supposed to be interesting in the newer games aren't all that great.

Don't get me wrong-- they're fine. They just don't do much for me, and certainly don't make me look at earlier games as inferior by comparison.

Just my two cents.

1. Half the fun of Gen I at least for me was discovering and playing around with the glitches. The remakes didn't have them, as they shouldn't. Glitches are mistakes and games should strive to be as mistake-free as possible. Regardless, it still curtailed my enjoyment of it.

2. They came out about six years after the original games. The latter were still very fresh in our minds and besides the mechanics and some sidequests there was not much to separate them.

3. The slight increase in the map scale for the GBA. In the originals, Kanto was small and cosy. Being a little bigger in the remakes made it seem empty and lifeless.

4. You could not get Crobat until the National Dex. This seems like a pretty shit reason, but going back to when I was 15 and I thought I'd be getting Crobat and instead I got an annoying interrupted evolution sequence every time Golbat leveled up until I finally removed his Poison Barb and gave him an Everstone soured my opinion of it a little.

Best Pokémon games are Platinum and Emerald still. Gen 5 suffers for not having a definite third game, so I hope that doesn't happen to Gen 6.

They definitely did gen 1 justice and had a nice amount of new things and whatnot. My favorite thing about them was the UI - the way the menus worked, the look of the Dex feeling more like some sort of travel encyclopedia, the way using items/tms on a pokemon had a little animation - stuff like that.

On the other hand, it helped point out just how boring the gen 1 plot is, and how generic and over all plain Kanto is as a region.

It did what it did well, and it was better than gen 1 (as any remake should be better than its original, in theory), but it didn't really have much to work with.

I found them very enjoyable, more-so than the Hoenn games to be honest. I especially liked how the games gave Charmander Metal Claw as a level up move. Fire Red was undoubtedly my favorite main series game of the Third Generation (though Gale of Darkness would be my favorite overall).

As for the regions, you're retarded. Minus Kanto, they've all had a lot of personality and diversity and interesting concepts.

How they succeeded was being pretty different from the RPGs offered at the time and having the anime/TCG help a lot, on top of the games being really fun regardless of what I wrote above. And the series has come a long way, so we owe something to them, even if they're shitty games.

That's not true. Things like Focus Energy being borked, the crit system in general (might not be a bug, but eh), the Leech Seed/Poison stack, never unfreezing sans the Centre or an item, using Agility eliminating the Paralysis speed drop, the Rage glitch, and all that jazz... There's definitely a lot more, but I can't quite recall them all. Thing is, even the battle system was borked. You can't exactly avoid battling.

Also like to add to >>21178807 , that even /Nintendo Power/ said that it was 7.2/10 and good, but not amazing, when it came out (before the hype, actually). Gold got 8.7/10, significantly better.

Thing is, I thought the first gen games were pretty fun, man, and not shitty games, but they're not that amazing in the long run.

Sequels are supposed to be designed better-- more at 11. Is the first LoZ shit because the sequels improved upon it? Is Super Mario Bros shit for the same reason? You can say that about pretty much anything.

Criminal organization terrorizes region by taking over buildings, murdering Pokemon, and stealing, all while their leader is hiding right under everyone's nose as a leader. It might sound like I'm trying to edge-up the story, but that's really how it goes.

That's a better plot than

Looking back and listing these "problems" isn't the same as saying it actually reduced people's enjoyment of the games. Who cares if Agility eliminates the PAR speed drop, or if Leech Seed and Poison stack? How is the game any worse for it?

Yellow helped a sizeable chunk for the things like MissingNo. (though, to be honest, I think that it made the experience less fun overall, even though the sprites looked so much nicer), but I don't recall it fixing anything for the battling.

What you're saying really only affected people who were into link battling the way people are into VGC and Showdown today. Which was a tiny fucking percentage of the people who played the games, and STILL they enjoyed it.

For what it was-- a monster-collecting RPG with the ability to trade with and battle against your friends-- all that stuff about crits and Rage went largely unnoticed.

I know I'm not alone in not caring at ALL about those types of "glitches", especially when the games came out. Most people didn't know they were glitches, if they were, and most of the people that DID know about them didn't care.

My entire point was that people always claim Gen 1 was bad because it was "buggy and filled with glitches", but it wasn't NEARLY as bad as all that. Go back and actually play a Gen 1 game and tell me those things really bother you and negatively affect your experience to the point of complaint.

I don't count mechanics from spin-offs because they weren't developed by Game Freak and I have no idea what they were told was a glitch that they should fix and what was their own original idea that GF may or may not have adapted back to the main series.

You guys keep thinking that I said that it made them less fun. I never said that, and I wasn't trying to focus on that part, since their detracting from the experience is completely subjective. I was responding to the idea that the glitches were hard to find; they're not. At all. Yes, these games were still fun. No, they are not better than their remakes, unless you are a huge fan of chiptunes, 8-bit graphics, glitch guinea pigs, or nostalgia - I can understand the first two, I really like those. That is pretty much all RBG have over Fr/Lg, though.

Nah, I just find them kinda boring now since I'd rather play the prettier remakes, and I've gone through Kanto at least seven times by this point, so I'm a little sick of it. I think you're projecting what people in general say about these games instead of just contesting my points, and I kind of understand that considering that it's the consensus on /vp/ and you probably get personally offended when people insult something that you really loved as a child, but I'm not saying they're shitty games, so there's no point at trying to convince /me/ of your opinion.

Perhaps that could be true, too, but I'd contest that Nintendo wouldn't really call for something that bastardized what they wanted the games to flow like to be allowed to be published.
