I disagree. I remember a long time ago I learned all abotu EVs and IVs for the first time during the ruby/sapphire era. I had played pokemon since red and blue of course, but had no idea there was an extra layer of depth determining how my pokemon's stats grew. It was literally a whole new world and tons of fun actually obtaining perfect pokemon for the first time and finally not feeling like my pokemon werent good enough to take on other people.

Noone said anything about using cookie cutter teams but you. People who dont understand how these types of things work would train say an Arbok, and do poorly with it. But knowing the different factors that determine the exact potential of said Arbok could give you an edge and allow you to do things that you wouldnt normally be able to do, and thereby getting the most out of using one of your favorite pokemon. Its FUN to do things like that. And yes, it is arguably fun, more fun than ever before now with how easy it is these days.

I called them scrubs because that's generally what this kind of person is. You never see anyone with any skill say "lol i just play for fun or else i totaly would of beat u" after they lose or whatever. That's your problem right there. You're not trying to make teams based around a favorite or even trying to create your own teams for better experience. All team building requires is experience- you'd be surprised what you can do with some shitmons if the team and strategy is well crafted.

Also Dragonair has pretty decent attack stats, not as brutal as Dragonite, but at least it's not 4x weak to ice attacks.
A well trained Dragonair can reach about ~100 in Defense, Sp. Defense and ~140 Attack. With the eviolite defense stats raise in x1.5, so its defenses rise to about ~150.

I 100% disagree with you.
To me, learning all that shit is great. Having the 100% unstoppable team is boring as shit. But learning how everything works, and fine tuning a team to be unstoppable, THAT IS FUN.

Also, one thing you learn quick in competitive is that cookie cutter smogon teams are low ladder trash. A rogue team (or mon, or move) that people don't expect will do massive damage to a competitive opponent because they will expect X and have to scramble when you hit them with Y.

Got a whole bunch of bred and trained shit, but the vast majority comes from lower tiers. It means that my teams have trouble against 100% smogon shit, but are generally good enough to beat random people.
Gave me a whole lot of appreciation for stuff I'd never used before. Granbull is probably the funnest cleric I've ever used.

I also fucking love eugenics simulators. FE4 is still my favorite Fire Emblem.
