The only problem is that it's fairly restrictive in arbitrary ways while being far too lenient in others (Phione is banned, anything that isn't Kalos native is banned for now, but Mega Kangaskhan is perfectly fine). Plus it's a doubles format which fragments opinion on it up front. It's the type of format you get into and follow while the tourney season is going on, but it's not something you can have fun playing day to day just to scratch a competitive itch.
Also, it being official is unimportant since the money they put behind it isn't so huge that people can make a living roaming from tourney to tourney. It's not like SC2, LoL, Dota 2, etc which have massive prizes for winners. This isn't to say VGC is bad. It's just another format that happens to be the one used in official tournaments that you probably won't ever go to.
