The mystery was great yes, but that was like 10% of the game, the game wasn't flopping, neither the anime or the serie and mew didn't save shit because there wasn't nothing to save.
The game didn't sell outside of Japan because people heard about said secret or shit like that. Pokémon sold like pokémon because it was pokémon, and I hope I don't have to explain what pokémon is about.
