Emboar is Zhu Bajie, so it probably has something to do with his armor, or even a representation of Luchador flare. I think a lot of wrestlers have patterns like that.

Serperior has royalty going for it, maybe something about gold patterns for regal stuff.

I get that Emboar's inspiration is what led to that kind of "design" but that doesn't mean it looks good. Same with Serperior. Maybe if they used blue? Or red? But it's always yellow, it looks so fucking unatural. Just yellow shapes all over them.

I'm not sure why they used yellow.
I think Yellow works for Emboar because it goes with Black nicely and it's a good colour for a fire-type. I already kind of explained Serperior, and I'm still not entirely sure of the inspiration for Mega-Sharpedo.

Yeah, this. I wish Rayquaquaniqua got a primal instead of a Mega. Primal Groudon/Kyogre look awesome, barely even a new form, just a streamlined version of their original design.

But for Rayquaza they gave a Mega and like Sharpedo and so many others decided to paste a bunch of shit all over him instead of being creative.

I never got the fuss about Garchomp's design. The spikes aren't exactly necessary, but they're not excessive either. My only complaint is the random colors between the star on its snout and the red and yellow on its belly. I think it'd be better if they were just all the same color.

It's called "overdesigning", and they're doing it because they've more or less run out of simple and fresh ideas so they'll just cover everything with yellow lines and/or spikes. Thankfully Gen VI was a step forward but GF has gone full retard again with most Megas.

This is why it pains me to see people bashing Infernape, yet praising Blaziken. Infernapesimply took the Fire/Fighting concept and improved on it with a lore that fits the typing. Not only that but the lore manifests itself first-hand in Infernape's design. It is ambitious, but it lived up to those ambitions. Definitely one of the best designed starters, and this is coming from someone who hates monkeys.

pokemon had a certain consistent level of cartooniness. it wasn't digimon level of detail, but it wasn't youkai watch level either. newer designs tend to be way more simplified for some reason.

Designs like Zorua being common in gen fucking two. If anything the first gen was an anomaly, and have you SEEN the sprites? The artwork was done AFTER them, in an effort to make the Pokemon presentable.

Stop posting this crap already. Newer designs aren't bad because they're more stylized.

That being said, the colors are actually based strongly off the Peruvian art style, so it tends to fit its inspiration pretty well

the fangs are based on sawtooth sharks and only appear on certain attacks.

Yes. It's also the point that scars aren't usually a positive thing, and Mega Evolutions tries to bring forth the full potential of a pokémon.
