Day/night returned, animations returned, the villain was outright sinister and dangerous, and Sinnoh just felt fucking huge. It took us, what, three? Four towns to get to a gym? What's more, it was split down the middle by a mountain range but never made us suffer through lengthy goddamn caves.
Fog was as unnecssary as Flash though.
But IMO the Pokétch, while low-tech, was an incredibly fun and interesting device to match the PokéGear. The apps reminded me a lot of the cards required to patch the old device, instead of the PokéNav's necessity to have someone crack it open with a screwdriver and fiddle about with the inner workings. The Pokétch also looked more durable than either of them.
I don't know, I guess I'm just a sucker for that shit. Also, GTS made it a lot easier to complete the Pokédex.
Fire-type selection was shit though. I would have picked Torterra if I had a good name and I was able to pick up a Vulpix relatively easily in my travels.
