Fennekin was most popular by far. However both Chespin and Froakie got their share of love and hate. It wasn't just the chestbros hating on Froakie but the other way around to. (And Fennekinfags were to busy praising Fennekin to care about the rest).
I also remember Froakie having the most ideas about it and its simplicity wasn't usually a problem. Does anybody remmeber the "Froakie=Edison" theory?
Completely agree about the second stages.
Greninja got a lot of hate at first. But mainly because it was the first to be revealed and had all the attention on itself.
Chestnaught and Delphox most got a lot of hate at first to for being to drastig and everything, respectively.
All pokemon got less hate as the time went on, Amie didn't just help Greninja but many others too (well except Delphox).
Greninja didn't become truly popular before people started understanding how OP its HA was.
