If only a handful of pokemon could learn it, it wouldn't be nearly as broken as it is.

Thats entirely wrong. The proper way to use a flamethrower is to use quick bursts because thats all that is required to burn someone.

my point is that it should have "a fire counterpart". Sure, boiling water may cause a burn, i get that. you know what else causes burns? fire. it's stupid that boiling water has such a high chance of burning while the moves of the type that burns, have less chance

Water type will always be broken, before Scald even existed Surf and Hydro Pump were amazing while lacking a status chance like their fire/ice/electric counterparts.

Scald is just above average and has retarded high distribution.

I was thinking the same thing. Slowbro is the only OU Scald user everything else either has no business using Scald (Azumarill. Gyarados) or is not a defensive Pokemon and generally requires the extra power from Surf or Hydro Pump (Keldeo, Greninja).

82 learn Stealth Rock, with no real common weaknesses.

Scald cripples physical attackers.
Most grass and electric types are special attackers. Lots of psychic types and some fairies, also generally special attackers, have access to electric moves.
I don't see the problem.

Someone explain to me using scald on a Quagsire that already has toxic.

If you're facing a steel type that cant be poisoned you/re gonna want to use earthquake anyways.

It seems to me like poisoning and then using a more powerful water STAB would be more useful than spamming scald and hoping that they MIGHT get burned.

Scald is liquid, just like lava. The liquid stays on your skin, flames don't unless you catch on fire. This, Scald can burn for a short time even after the attack is finished. Which is why Scald and Lava Plume do the exact same thing but no one remembers LP exists despite being 2 gens older

You're a funny guy, OP. But I do think Scald is a bit broken, if they lowered both the BP and Burn % by 10 points each then it'd be a bit more balanced.
