So, is there an actual point to Mega Evolution.
I've played through X & Y twice and didn't use a Mega past the point you have to using Lucario.
Does anyone actually need their Mega's to succeed in the game because I can only ever see it as a poor gimmick at best and badly disguised rip off at worst.

Ideally, it gives fully evolved Pokemon that aren't capable of being good anymore (if they ever were) a chance to actually be useful in battle. Shitmon like Pidgeot and Beedrill are already three staged, and can never normally evolve higher, so a Mega is the only way to go.

Unfortunately it's mostly used as a gimmick to make already popular Pokemon more popular.

I think Mega's were made to both rejuvenate old/forgotten Pokemon and to change up the Meta-game.
I'm sure many people didn't use them during the main game play but a lot are used in tournaments and stuff.

also, probably to make the game easier for kids.
i couldn't complete red my first time around because i was an idiot kid (only used my charizard, taught it all fire moves and avoided all battles that i could).
i probably would have won even being a stupid ass child if i had been handed a second starter + mega stone and a mega lucario.

The single player game is just an extended tutorial for the VS. game. Megas aren't worth bothering with in the single player since it's as ridiculously easy as it's always been, but against another human Megas change the entire game.

nothing about single player pokemon prepares you for pvp, other than most basic of mechanics.

Not just the word, but also the time limit, Pokémon use Mega Evolution, which would denote evolving past their natural barriers, but when has Evolution been on a timer, you don't see humans regressing into monkeys. Digimon Digivolution are data constructs transforming when needed then the data is expanded causing their forms to regress. What Pokémon are doing with Mega Evolutions sound a lot more like what Digimon does with their Digivolution then it does with natural evolution.

I was 10 when I played and finished Blue Version, far before the Missingno. Glitch with a party including a Charizard with only Fire moves. I didn't need a second starter or a Mega Stone.

the term evolution as used in pokemon has hardly anything to do with real life evolution, your humans regressing point is moot.

Games have always been about Single Player mode, it's only now thanks to the MMO and online human player only games that more importance has been placed on what should only be an extra. I'd rather play a flushed out single player story mode then place all my faith in a boring PvP mode full of people who take it too seriously.
A games appeal is in the story it tells, and playing against real people take away from that, especially when developers focus on those asinine aspects and cause the story to suffer as a result.

Why can't the new Pokemon be on par with the old ones. Then we wouldn't need the lame arsed Mega idea to help us enjoy. The whole idea of (supposed) real life creatures suddenly regressing in their evolution just annoys me.
I pesonally will never need to use the Mega-Gimmick because the game doesn't need it. I still kick arse with my lvl 100 Pidgeot, Crobat and Vaporeon.

The game developers just need to create the new pokemon with stats/abilities and so forth along the same line as the old ones, then they wouldn't seem so outdated.

The social and competitive aspects are what made the game popular to begin with. Catching them all through trading with friends and then raising a team to beat them into a pulp with are the two core aspects of the gameplay. Collecting and battling is all there is, and if that's where it stopped with no focus on one-upping your friends it'd just be a shallow RPG against a moronic AI. Almost everything about the game's design assumes that, at some point, you're gonna want to git gud and start playing head games with your friends.

I never used a mega during my first play through of X and Y either. Now I'm playing through it a second time and I added the Lucario to my team, having a lot of fun this time round. Used Mega Gengar a couple of times too.

Never played against a real person because every person I've played against in a PvP environment are dicks, whether they've been my friends of been a random mook of the Interweb. You are right that collecting and battling is all there is but that is because that is Pokémon, regardless of the PvP aspect, also it's how the developers make the games as is. Saying it becomes a shallow RPG is like spitting over the Genre, because Pokémon is just that, an RPG. Wasting all this time on a single function such as PvP is doing the game far more harm by forsaking a part of it's fan base.

It is an RPG, but against the computer it's a totally vapid one. The AI doesn't logically switch, the AI's move sets are rarely legitimately threatening, and the AI will never try to read you. What makes Pokemon games unique is that they're RPGs made to be played against other people instead of just boss characters.

The single player game in Pokemon has always been serviceable but the game progresses you to learn more and play better. The skills it does attempt to teach you are all completely lost if you just turn off the power and say "Well, that's that," after you beat the champ

You're throwing away a majority of the game if you're not playing it to compete in the long run. I'm not saying that the single player game is unenjoyable or that it's wrong to enjoy it, but it's there to push you on to punching your friends square in the gut with the pokemon you've been raising for the past thirty hours.

As an RPG it could be massive but all I see is memory being chewed up with crazy disrepair by useless game plots, useless information/dialogue and useless game mechanics. And what if a separate game existed for the PvP fags. The developers are too busy trying to make this game hip and happening without really trying to make it a game that actually works and good. If it was made right as an RPG this game would be grouse, even on the portable format.

I can respect your opinion and ideally it is great, but there are those who can't do PvP because of a reason and therefore feel cheated due to the fact that the developers choose to focus of that aspect while ignoring the other aspects that make up Pokémon that a set number of fans prefer. Why should the main story be only so you can get used to the game, why do you have to get more enjoyment battling against other people then against a fully fledge AI that can give you a challenge if they're programmed right.
Why is it that we are guided into the fact that the end of a Pokémon game is the defeat of the Champion. The developers have the ability to appease both sides of the coin, but they pander to the PvP side, that is the real issue.
