I'd advice you on the following
1. GTS is your friend. Use it to help you. Using the Seek function will result in many people seem to want unreasonable demands such as X normal poke for Y legend; ignore those. Instead, use the Deposit function and deposit a relatively obscure, in-demand poke (such as transfer only bred poke, or Friend Safari poke). You should receive your desired poke shortly, since there is never a lapse of nippon fanatics or fellow dex filling enthusiasts.
2. Don't hesitate to breed what you need. Even though breeding might seem like a hassle, often times, it is worth it. Keep the extra eggs of demanded pokes for GTS trades. Breeding is not a hassle at all especially with Hatching Power 3, which can typically hatch 5 eggs within that 3 minute timeslot.
3. Try to do things efficiently by transferring the pokes you have from old carts. For example, if you have HGSS DPPt B2W2, you can quickly sieve out what you lack and what you need. Useful pages are the Regional Dex page, Friend Safari page, Unobtainable Pokes page from databases like Serebii. This is especially crucial for legends which you will struggle with.
4. Up to you, but personally I find giveaways from /gg/, /wfg/ and /gtsg/ useful for certain pokes. As much as /vp/ hates each other, your /vp/reons do occasionally have a kind heart
