Hey. I'm curious about competitive PKM, but I already don't know shit about the game casually, and it all seems like so much fucking information.

Isnt there some content maker like Day9 in SC2 that makes informative stuff for newbs and shitters?

Unironically check Smogon, it's the best site for beginners, just look at the page of the pokémon you want to use and look for their info. Also learn what tiers are since of course your Pikachu won't win against Garchomp.
Use showdown to test you teams since you can easily tweak them there instead of having to spend hours of breeding just to find out the team is shit. Only when you're fine with the team you may start breeding.

Also after you start gitting gud stop using Smogon and start making your own sets. Smogon sets are just guides, they don't take your team synergy or way of playing into account, so modify the spreads to fit your playstyle, also originality is a strenght here (but don't get too crazy and retarded though, that will backfire for obvious reason).

Being utter shit at first is normal so just keep trying.

I'll give you a tip- the main difference between competitive Pokemon and ingame shit is switching. It's like rock paper scissors, except with attack, power up, or switch being the main types of choices you can make in any given turn. Switching into an attack to absorb the hit is one of the most basic things that you have to do. But your opponent can predict what you are switching to, or they can boost stats/use a status move/set up hazards when you switch. Switching Pokemon is extremely common and necessary, and both players try to exploit that within the other.

One small correction here. The Smogon Dex sets are usually written as a general framework for the role of that mon, taking into account most of what's actually effective on that mon. So the Mega Gardevoir page will tell you the set with Taunt can push past certain threats with XYZ coverage moves. Being "original" isn't always the best way to go. Normally mons can't stray too far from the standard role without becoming a liability.

actually i find the smogon forums pretty good for making competitive sets. the part of the community who discusses and makes stuff is good. All the hangers-on who wait for the results of their experimenting and then just repeat it ad-nauseum are not.

showderp is a useful tool to test out plans, obviously if you go crazy making perfect IV uber teams you'll be disappointed at how hard that is in the regular game. but if you use showderp as a tool to help you it's useful.

But to the point, the time it takes you to get out of ELO hell (which is necessary to actually test teams, as you can't guage anything against shitters) will be more than enough to give you a taste of how superior Showdown is compared to cart in both ease of use and matchmaking.

Thing is that once you've made your competitive team on-cartridge, you'll struggle to find many decent matches. WiFi singles is filled with 10-year-olds and doesn't have the same rules as Smogon singles.

Good points, I just assumed OP meant he wanted to get into competitive Pokemon via the cart games. If OP wants to just play Pokemon competitively I don't disagree Showdown is superior.
