Some major shittalk also tossed Cyndaquil's way but when the evos came out people generally liked that line too, while Chikorita remained the redheaded stepchild of gen 2 starters (kinda like how bulbasaur was in gen 1, by a large margin the least popular but even moreso).
Gen 5 was probably the biggest clusterfuck of shitmon starters in history overall.
