>inb4 hurr pokemon is the same shit over and oversay what you want about gen 1 but when it came out Pokemon was considered one of the most revolutionary handheld games ever, instead of just swinging swords and spam magic you had to capture your own unique mosters, you could choose who you wanted to carry on your team, how to personalize their movesets and of course the most important thing of all, you could trade them with your friends in order to evolve them even further or just to complete the pokedex, nowadays with are all used to with the trading thing and expecially with X/Y it has become very easy to trade and battle with people but back in the days it was a very revolutionary thing.
Also as the series went on they added even more stuff such as Natures, Abilities, minigames like the contests and of course, lots LOTS of moves and Pokemon
