Origins is probably the best current characterization for him. I always figured he'd start out naive, but eager, with his heart in the right place. But he becomes more skilled as he goes along, and ultimately turns into a bit of a badass.
But definitely not the edgy sort. And no real loner would do well as a Pokemon Trainer. Passerby Boy sort of proves that.
