For gen 4 you need FCs to trade without the GTS, correct? It its impossible to get an FC since no more Nintendo wifi.

As for 5, trading through IR, would it work without an FC.

I haven't tried this myself because my FC's are already registered, but I'm pretty sure you can trade over Wireless in gen IV/V without haveing the FC registered beforehand.
