I always do the same in every game.
If the game has a character creator / gender options I always play as male because I'm male, simply as that.
If the game has several character options, I don't care if I play a male/female/robot/nigger as long as I like the game or the play style of the character.

I do both honestly. I name my character after myself as I like to think of him as myself.
The all caps thing is because my name in the earlier games where all caps when I was young, and I like to keep that tradition.

I just choose depending on which character has the better design. (And the one with more and better customization options in XY)
Boys in FRLG, Crystal, HGSS
Girls in DPP, BW2, XY, ORAS
The rest is pretty 50/50 but prefer boy in BW and girl in RSE.
