It's common sense in programming terms. Not hard to just have the items 'disappear' if the patch isn't on the system and then have them 'reappear' when the patch is again downloaded.
No excuse or reasoning as to it being impossible on a level of technological limitations. It's completely possible. They just would have had to plan ahead and make XY compatible with such a method of patching. There are some things you cannot patch in post. Unless they had planned patches of this magnitude before shipping, I doubt it's a possibility ever for XY. Maybe Gen 7.
