Ive always assumed its because the pokemons consciousness is captured in the data of the pokeball and that doesnt work if the pokemon is unconscious.

I feel as though I'd be left feeling much less satisfied if the message "Wild ______ fled!" every time I got a poke down to 0 hp as opposed to something indicating success, like fainted.

There is none. I'm inclined to think they flee and the trainer lets them go, as "fainted" in pokemon doesn't seem to mean literally unconscious, just that they have no will to battle.

Whether this either impedes the Pokeball by design, or simply demonstrates the PC's stance regarding the morality of capturing Pokemon, is ambiguous at best.

Most franchises try to drop the meta explanations (other than minutae) after just a few games, and when there's something that is obviously just meta, everyone looses their shit

But pokemon? Pokemon is probably the most meta thing i can think off
