First, you should stop thinking so squarely, new megas are in fact new pokemon. From this point of view... was Munchlax and Donphan available for RBY? Were people demanding them? Same for Lucario and Munchlax in RSE, and Zoroark/Zorua in DPPT. Why are you now demanding new pokemon in your old games??
Now, these are not even old games that they dropped altogether. They are still supporting them with their own ligue, their own PSS and whatnot. The only thing you won't be gettin is the NEW features, which is something that's both logical and natural.
I don't know where people got the idea these games won't be compatible whatsoever.
