They wouldn't let me play in mcdonalds without ordering food as mother was shopping.
I'm 23 years old and its a free country. All the seats were open anyway. I wasn't bothering anyone and there was free wifi.

Right, and they have a right to private ownership of land. Which Mcdonalds have, of their restaurant. Regardless of how empty the seats are, they know that if there is demand for one of them (so you can use the wifi), they will attempt to charge as much as possible, and this is legal on their land.
