Tate is a male English name, but I am not a native English speaker so I never knew if it is a female or male name.

1. They look exactly the same
2. They are twins
3. Exactly same looking twins are usually of the same gender, because of genetic identity

The only clue was that Liza was a real girls name, and Tate wasn't a real name at all.

The only time I've ever heard Tate used was as a surname, like Sharon Tate.

The only visual indication they were different genders was that Liza had longer hair - even though they've had female characters with short hair in the games, and short hair on girls is more common for children like Liza. Since both of them are wearing bows in their hair it's an easy mistake to think both are girls.

You couldn't even make the guess based their Pokemon, they were all genderless except Xatu in Emerald.

When I played, I saw their names. Liza is obviously a girl's name, but I've never heard of the name Tate in my life. Then you see their outfits, which are identical. The pixel sprites don't give away jack shit either, and I wasn't a fucking idiot and I knew girls have short hair sometimes.

Unrelated, I always thought Tate was a girl until I saw the anime because there was a girl I knew from pre-school who's name was Taytum. I always figured Tate was similarly feminine because of it.
