Or, you know, it could have been canon from the start. The whole "trapped on the S.S. Anne and Raticate died" thing is a stretch, but the rival is definitely in Pokemon Tower for a reason.

It's not like they accidentally coded the rival battle and accidentally wrote the dialogue and accidentally changed his team.

The best part about this is the amusing synchronicity between the fanrumors and how things came to pass. Gift pokemon for beating the Elite Four. A stone that lets FE pokemon evolve even further. Things like that.

Not predictions, just pokemon fans getting in tune with how the series logically evolved. It's fun to think about.
