I want to get into the pokemon games. where is the best place to start? I assume its like monster hunter and its best to start with the newest one first, right?

Arguably Black and White 2 are the best ones to start with just for the sheer amount of content.
You could start with X&Y though but you may as well just wait for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

One of the problems with Pokemon games is, when you play the newer ones first, you'll miss all the things the older ones didn't have.
So if you want to play ALL of them eventually, start from Red and Blue, but if you don't care about that, go with the newest ones.

Go XY. It has the largest pokemon roster. or if you are a 2D fag and want a slightly more challenging game, go BW2. Just know that BW2 have their wifi turned off

Every single game is a solid one in its way.

I'd suggest you to emulate the older ones and eventually pick XY and/or ORAS if you liked those.
Just keep in mind something, never pick Gold and Silver, Ruby Sapphire, Diamond and Pearl because Crystal, Emerald and Platinum are the improved superior versions of those duos.

Don't play older gens unless you want to know the storylines as such. Nintendo had to shut down the wifi service for DS and Wii so it's impossible for DPPt/HGSS/BW/BW2 to do any kind of internet trade.

XY has:

-the most modern game mechanics (for example anything pre gen 5 sucks because finite TM usage and anything pre gen 4 sucks even more because no physical/special split)

You could also go ORAS which is the same gen as XY, but if ORAS will probably have a pitiful pokedex until you beat the game and IMO the region is terrible because it's half water.

Oh boy here we go. OP, the only issue with ORAS is that its region, Hoenn, has mixed opinions. Don't let them fool you, the region is not as bad as they make it seem.

OP here. From what I've read I'm going to go with Pokemon Y (picking Y because red > blue and the monster on the cover looks cooler). I want to be able to use online and people said the X and Y games have the most pokemon so that sounds the best.

Yeah that's alright. Though I suggest you also play Black (or White) 2 because it's probably the best Pokmon game till now. Only thing it doesn't have is Mega Evos and around 70 new Pokemon, but it doesn't really matter.

If I was you I'd wait for another month for ORAS unless you're really, REALLY on a hurry. ORAS will have around the same Pokemon at the time of postgame as XY as you'll be able to catch lots of Pokemon not available before finishing the league. They've revelared that between ORAS and XY you'll be able to get all Pokemon, so everything not in XY will be in ORAS.
