What do you mean?
New 3ds with the new hardware specs.
New 3rd xl with the new hardware specs.
Basically both were made to replace the old 3ds as an answer to pokemon's 20fps frame rate.

Buy a refurbished 3DSXL for 130-140. When the new one comes out, do a trade up.

It's the only valuable one worth trading. That way the worst case scenario is you have the XL at least, and if you do the trade off, you get 80+ bucks off the NN3DS you're already intended on buying. Or get the 2DS/regular 3DS and try to trade that in later on but I'm not sure of their values.

I'm in the same exact situation OP.

The N3DS doesn't improve framrate for older games.
They would probably need to patch it.
If gamefreak isn't going to patch X/Y for ORAS they aren't for this.

The normal sized 3DS gets switchable face and back plates but the 3DS XL doesn't.

Sticking to my Pikachu 3DS XL.

Is your 3DS up to date? If you're on an older firmware you can get a flashcard and just download roms. I sold my 3DS and purchased a refurbished one with stock firmware to use flashcards with.
