I actually liked the Gold/Silver sprite for red, and the HG/SS one too. But people went over board with the "lone wolf, dark badass" Red look, it just falls into the edgy spectrum.
TL;DR: Gold/Silver/HG/SS Red was cool, but the fanbase made him too edgy... They had it coming.
