I don't understand mega evolutions.

I don't understand why Gamefreak came up with the idea or what their goal of implementing mega evolutions is. There's no consistency to what type of pokemon get mega evolutions, how strong those mega evolutions are, or even how many mega evolutions a pokemon gets.

Some pokemon with mega evolutions, like Kangaskhan, are one-stage, underpowered pokemon. Others, like Garchomp, are three-stage, incredibly strong pokemon.

You'd think that maybe the point was to give underpowered pokemon a way to be used in standard competitive play but increasing their power in battles. But the mega evolutions don't even bring the base stat totals for the pokemon anywhere close to each other. Mega Banette's base stat total is 555 while mega Garchomp's is fucking 700. Some get great abilities while others get poor ones.

As a game mechanic, why the fuck do mega evolutions exist?
