Ok, just bought a 3ds so I can play ORAS. I need some advice on setting it up, getting free skins for the menu, anything I should know about it that I'm sure everyone else figured out 3 years ago.

What should I do first?

Is there any way I can delete the old streetpass settings or the old mii? Got it off a friend, and I'd rather not wipe the thing clean. Still want to personalize it like it was mine from the box.

Go to settings and reset everything then just enter to the eshop and download again the games. Done.

I changed the DS user settings to what I wanted them to be, but the friend thing still shows his mii. Any idea how to change that?

Also I don't want to reset it, worried some of his games might get lost in translation. It came with one of them.

If you want some decent skins for the menu you'll need to buy them.

Just go to the mii editor, deselect your friend's mii, create your own mii and then select it as your default avatar.

the games are tied with your 3ds "internal serial number"
as long you dont format it you wont lose them
if the disappear, they'll be for free redownload on eshop

formatting is deleting all the operating system and putting a new one, not something easy to do

reseting to factory will just reset the current OS to its original form

if you are unsure, search the options the 3ds gives you on the nintendo website, they'll be explained

you also need to be careful with the Miiverse account, this one you can't create a new one without losing your eshop data, and losing your games with it. If you friend created a miiverse account, you'll have to use that one.

You should have not bought a 3DS (unless you got a 3DS XL, in which case, you still shouldn't have, because the New 3DS is coming out soon). The 3DS TELLS you how to use the skins, and the only free ones are the solid colours.
