But considering the various changes occurring in the series; as well as the unique development I feel Serena and Ash are both getting, I'd say something different will happen.
Ash will more than likely win the league for the first time, with the help of Serena cheering him on of course. Her encouragement affects Ash on a level the previous PokeGirls hadn't been able to match. After his win, Ash will ask Serena to join him on his next journey where both can follow their dreams. Serena will hesitate, but Ash will grab her hand. Then as they walk side by side a flashback will appear showing their first encounter. Their story becomes a full circle.
Cue the time skip to either an older more mature Ash or to their off spring.

Sure you can say that Misty came with Ash during Johto, but Johto was almost like an extension of Kanto, and Kris didn't exist when Johto started, whereas Kalos is not directly linked with any earlier region.

Personally as a viewer of both Yugioh and Pokemon I feel both did something RIGHT this time around. Yuya and Yuzu have a good thing going and they're following the real life card game better while all the characters in X and Y are a lot more likable than previous series and it really makes on look forward to the following episode.
