>>21438623 Honestly when you think about it, there's only really been 3 "main" rivals: Gary, Paul, and Trip. Gary was funny and then bland, no need to say more about Paul, and Trip was just a case them clearly not having planned ahead.
Gary worked for what he was in the original series, basically he was there for a quick joke most of the time. They tried to make him a "serious" rival in Johto and took away most of his personality and he stopped being fun to watch. At least that last battle was good, and at least they bothered to give that whole rivalry some closure.
The secondary rivals all did what they did just fine for the most part, they're just there to bring more variety to the cast. If you want another "main" rival for Ash they need to think of something that will challenge him as a Trainer instead simply being really strong, because it's not like Ash doesn't lose a lot anyway. Personally I really think its time to pull out that whole Ash's dad idea they have locked up, that has a lot of potential.

I think the series really became its modern form in Johto once they realized Pokemon would go on forever, but of course they had no idea what the fuck they were doing in Johto and Gary basically lost all his personality and stopped being funny.
Then after reforming how the series would balance in a major female character in Advance, they were ready to have another rival character and they hit it out of the park in DP.
Then we all know soft reset in BW really fucked up the show.
