Got a VHS tape in the mail the August before pokemon came out in the use. The tape was from Nintendo and had actors dressed as different pokemon anime characters to explain what pokemon was. My brother an I thought it was the dumbest shit ever. Later that fall my aunt bought me a gb pocket and blue and I never looked back.

Oh well later that year I got like 10 holographic cards in a trade b I had the Japanese misty trainer card where you could see the silhouette of her boob from the side. The deck had 2 so I kept one for fapping and made my big trade with the other.

I'll never forget how Pokemon affected my elementary school. You had 5th graders wanting to trade cards with 1st graders.
Kids traded anything Pokemon related. At one point, we were trading bookmarks and those erasers shaped like Pokemon. I rode the school bus and people loved to trade and show off binders of cards on the way home. I remember trading Burger King cards with some girl.

One of the most impressive things I remember is that you could actually watch official world tournament broadcasts (it was called Journey Across America, kind of like proto VGC) with professional commentary on our mainstream TV. I still remember the Pokemon I saw, from the only time I managed to catch it on the TV - Zapdos, Chansey, Rhydon, Articuno and some water type Pokemon with Surf. It was the first time I learned that Pokemon competitive play is a thing.

Nah man, i had these duracell batteries that lasted me 2 days of uninterrupted use more or less, and my mom always bought me more of them after work

What i did stole were some small pokemon figurines from school, i ended up stealing and "trading" like 200 of them, but to be fair they had loads of them in storage, most kids didnt even knew their names other than "it's pikachu", yet they played with them

Dad was smarter than your average bear and he saw how much I liked to play my gameboy, he got me a battery pack that gave me plenty of power and it even had a cord to plug into the wall to charge as I played it. That thing lasted several years and eventually I just left it hooked into the wall and played it from that.

It wasn't one of those weird battery ones either, that's just a bump on the back of the gameboy that makes it weird to hold. It was a rectangle battery pack that stuck out on either side as handles. awesome.

Kellogg's cereals had these holographic cards which showed evolutions, in particular I remember having the Butterfree line.

There was this gum you could buy for like 5p which had a sticker with the anime artwork of a Pokemon on, in particular I remember a Magnemite one for some reason.

I remember those Tazos although I don't remember them being called that. They came in Cheetos, which they don't sell here anymore, so whenever I hear of them I think of Pokemon.

I was kind of too young for it to be a big thing at my school (born 1996, liked Pokemon ever since the anime aired over here like 1999), but the TCG was so fucking popular at my cousin's school, he gave me my first cards, amongst those a Lickitung.

Topps candy had these Pokeballs you could for get like £1 with horrible sweets and a PVC figure inside. Saw them at Tesco's in late gen III and gen IV, but unbeknownst to some, they were around gens I and II as well. I had a fair few, Psyduck, Bulbasaur, Charmeleon, Mantine, Octillery. Still have them all and ordered a couple more of the Bulbasaurs from eBay a while ago just because.

Then there's trawling around car boot sales and charity shops for plushies post Pokemania. Fuck, that was my childhood right there.

Oh and I had those figures with the metal ball in the bottom so they rolled along a flat surface. And this Charmander ball with a speaker that said its name and a played a little ditty. My brother had the Bulbasaur.

Really had no idea my upbringing was this good. Wonder where it all went wrong.

All tr neighborhood kids would gather in the alley next to this one kids house with their gameboys and card binders. Every kid on the block would be there trading with the link cable, having link battles, trading and showing off cards.

One day some kid from the next block over comes and tries to tell us all how digimon was better. We all laugh an tell him it's shit. He started to cry and ran home.

Another time this kid appeared with the event mew on his cart and link traded it with all of us so we could complete our pokedexes. Still remember that day.

The colors are oversaturated and their design looks more plastic Bandai knock-off toy than the cartoonish 3D we have now. A lot more effort to them, but they don't look better. Not to blanket accuse you of nostalgia, but you're wearing goggles, friend.

Don't be an idiot. It was an awful time. This coming from someone who loves Pokemon, it was a horrific mess and almost made me avoid it entirely because of how disgustingly out of control it was.

What's worse, the way it died down sort of proved how many were just caught up in the fad, and didn't actually care about it. I had to go through Gen II and III almost entirely alone because my friends had all moved on.

I don't feel sorry for anyone who missed it. I envy them.
