I don't mind the tiering system, it's a great idea to balance out the Singles meta. But the whole reason they need the tiering system is that the game isn't meant to play competitively with 6v6 Singles. It's not even an option on the cartridge ranked play, let alone actual live tournaments.
And that in itself is fine, some people want to play 6v6 singles and use tiering to balance it out. But it's become ubiquitous, and now mons are referred to by their tiers in completely inappropriate settings-it's meaningless outside Smogon Singles, yet still comes up in conversations about VGC.
Then you get people referring to it as "competitive". What truly competitive game or sport in the world has its rules dictated by the more accomplished players, with no real-life prize tournaments?
Then there's all the miniature fuckups; the Swagger ban, people blaming Smogon for mons being low tier, the fact that there needs to be an Endless Battle Clause (isn't this enough of a sign that 6v6 singles just isn't meant to work?) It's just a whirlpool of shit surrounding an otherwise fun idea.
