I need some help, /vp/. I can't quite say that I am competitive, but I want to be. It's disappointing that you're at a disadvantage if you just want to pick 6 of your favorite Pokemon and call it a team. I've learned the hard way that it's never going to work out based on how Pokemon game mechanics have been engineered. Tiers, as I understand them, are actually pretty neat so that people can work with what's realistically fair in battle while maintaining the use of their favorite Pokemon. But it's sad, as the game's mechanics are engineered, that particular Pokemon always end up getting grouped together in the same party for a super strong team. I almost always see someone using a Rotom on their team when I'm in the mood for Random Matchup on X/Y. It's really getting boring. Although, I feel like I'm misunderstanding this all, can someone give me some ideas to compete without looking at it this way? I want to be competitive without the boring shit. If anyone could offer me resources, or advice, I would greatly appreciate it. I want to know what the ideal set up is for a team, and what to look for when creating a team. I know that I could easily look this up, but despite all of the bait that circulates /vp/, I'm sure there are plenty of experts here that could give me some solid advice. I'm going to leave a list of my favorite Pokemon if you have some suggestions: Absol, Altaria, Corsola, Dedenne, Gallade, Latios, Masquerain, Meganium, Metagross, Milotic, Porygon (the whole line), Shaymin, Skarmory, Steelix, Suicune (my absolute favorite), and Sylveon With Suicune being my favorite Pokemon (ever), I know that the most popular strategy is CroCune, but it's really boring and I was kind of hoping for using Suicune as an offensive part of my team. Also, general noob competition help thread, so that it's not only about me.

Dont be afraid to use mons youre not sure of/dont like very much, you never know what youre gonna warm up to, or what particular team comps are gonna have good synergy with your favs. What most people i know do is pick one favorite, then build off of it based on its strengths/weaknesses, so if you wanna use Suicune as your offensive star, definitely look at mons that resist electric and grass like roserade and gastrodon as a defensive corealso adamant Gallade @choice scarf with close combat, poison jab, night slash and psycho cut is one of my favorites to run on battlespot, i cant recommend it enough

Use whatever you want. Make an adjustment or two if you feel a deficit somewhere.

>>21472621 don't forget ferrothorn or mega venusaur, they'd probably be pretty good teammates for suicune. also op if you have access to a latias i'd suggest using that, great switch in to rotom and can take it down w draco meteor.

>>21472626 You have a point. Like the anon above said, I should be able to work with my favorites. I may have to have a few trial runs to get an idea of what to adjust though.
Anymore ideas, anyone?

>>21472413 Try playing Doubles. There are many more viable pokemon than in Singles, the onus is more on player skill than team selection and the battles are shorter so you can make a mistake and learn from it rather than make a mistake without realising and spend half an hour being ground down by the opponent.
Do what
>>21472621 says. If you're not particularly experienced, you'll need to use some of the boring shit to find out what makes it so good, then go looking for some of that in your favourites in order to bring out their best. Start out by playing a standard team but change one or two things to incorporate a mon you really like and show a bit of your personality. Once you know how the solid teams work, you'll be able to start making your own.
Just as you know in yourself that you can't expect to win all your battles straight off, know that you can't build an effective team of your own straight off. Learn the basics, grind through the crap, then build up to using more and more mons just because you like them and can see how to bring out their best.

From my experience, here's the best advice to running non-OU Pokemon in OU: Learn how to play defensively. Get a good feel for what you're likely to run into and make sure you have a means to deal with each of them. Worry about shutting down your opponent's Pokemon one at a time rather than setting up a sweep. For example, Mega Absol is kind of shitty on normal teams, but amazing when playing reactionary.

>>21472807 Will do. Doubles sounds like a great idea for a clearer picture of what's going on since Single battles can be pretty dynamic sometimes.
Also, yeah, I figured I'd have to see for myself what the big deal is on some of these popular choices that I often see.
I don't expect to always win, but having my own stable and unique team is way more rewarding, for me personally, than just racking wins.
>>21472814 Definitely makes sense. Also, I've seen some folks use generally weaker Pokemon (out of personal preference/taste) and set the stage through its stronger teammates to rack up as much power as possible.
Thanks to everyone that has helped so far. Really appreciate it and taking note of everything.

I also want to get into competitive but don't know how people know what kinds of teams to make and what kinds of moves to useAnd why does everyone on /vp/ hate Smogon? Do they not give good movesets or what?
Anonymous
>>21473596 smogon are hated because people are fucking idiots. People complain that they say only certain Pokemon are usable, but what they do is split them up in to tiers, so even if you want to use a shitty pokemon, you can use it against other shitty pokemon
Anonymous
>>21473616 The tiers are pretty much based off their usage, right?
Except for Übers. Lots of times they just put stuff in there when they don't want to deal with them. Hopeful Trainer

Yo, everyone. I had a quick question. I'm still experimenting and whatnot, but... In a team of Porygon2 (Eviolite), Suicune, Latios, and Sylveon; is it possible for me to add: Altaria, Gallade, Milotic, Metagross, or Steelix? Which two of these would be the most viable to add to my team? Or better yet, would you recommend adding a third from of these five in exchange for one of the Pokemon currently on the team that I'm building? I'm sort of unsure about have Sylveon, but I don't know...
Anonymous
>>21476799 You could stick Steelix in as a physical tank with Stealth Rock. Metagross would be good as well, as you lack a physical attacker.
My advice to other people would be to look up what Pokemon you like on Smogon, and see what it suggests under team options, then test it and see what gives you trouble, then adapt.
>>21475448 That's right. Your spoilered bit is correct as well, but it's simplifying it. They ban things to ubers when they become over centralising. When teams become Threat/Check to threat #1/Check to threat #2/filler/filler/filler the metagame becomes very stale. If a Pokemon is included on many many teams just because all it does is counter Aegislash (for example) then Aegislash is over centralising.
Anonymous
>>21476799 Sylveon's a damn solid choice, assuming we're talking about Hyper Voice Pixilate Sylveon.
I'm a big fan of bulky Milotic, but with Suicune already on your team I wouldn't add a second Water type.
Metagross would give you a physical attacker, which is something you desperately lack at the moment. I've had some fun with Agility+Weakness Policy.
Gallade's a cool poke with some nice options. Would also be something physical.
I'd wait with Altaria until M-Altaria is out (unless you're playing ORAS-OU on showdown or something).
Never really used Steelix, can't say too much about it I'm afraid.

>>21476864 Yeah, I think I'll go ahead and have Steelix on my team. Forgot that I'm going to need a good tank.
As for Metagross in terms of an attacker, I think I may favor Gallade a little bit more for that role. I like his movepool a lot.
>>21477617 My Sylveon is almost perfect except that it's missing Pixilate and Hyper Voice.
I'll have to temporarily replace it with a different Pokemon until I can sort that stuff out.
It's a shame that having Milotic would be redundant since I have Suicune. ;_;
I'll be featuring Gallade for sure, I think I've made up my mind. As for Altaria, I figured it would be stupid to have it on my team (currently).
As much as I love Altaria, it would probably be smart to just wait for M-Altaria.

What nature would you guys recommend for a tanking Steelix/M-Steelix? Sassy or Brave? As a tank, would that extra attack be necessary to assist in kills or is it more important to rack up as much defense as possible?

Is there any way to play with this thing as part of the core of my team that isn't some shitty baton passing set? Did any of those move tutors improve it?

>>21482937 It actually got some pretty good tutors: Elemental Punches, Drain Punch, Knock Off.

>>21472413 Tip #1: Don't just use what you like. Good players and even smogonbabbies will eat you alive.
Tip #2: Don't just use a cookie-cutter smogonbabby team. Good players will eat you alive.
Competitive pokemon is all about striking a balance between effective tactics (that are thus well-documented and predictable) and unpredictable ones (which are almost always weaker or more easily shut down). That's honestly all the real advice anyone can give you beyond the basics. If you don;t even know the basics and are still building lmao6sweeper teams, then you're probably better off becoming a straight smogonbabby for a while.
