Mega Altaria is a ridiculously good sweeper. A single Dragon Dance can potentially sweep teams, and I've found that very little stops it.

It has enough bulk and resistances to tank hits while setting up, even with an offensive EV spread. A burn won't even stop it, actually. Unless you can KO or 2HKO, Altaria can just keep dancing, then muscle through everything. Talonflame and Scizor give it trouble, Mamoswine needs to catch it below 60% to KO with Ice Shard and can't take a +1 Return, and Landorus-T is bulky enough to tank a Return (deals about 80%) but can't do much back; Only the Adamant Scarf set can 2HKO with Earthquake.

Hell, I've even used Ferrothorn as setup fodder a few times. Mega Altaria's stats might not be sky high, but IMO it gives Mega Charizard X and Salamence serious competition as a DDer. Pixilate Return really is that good.

Dragonite, Char-X, and Gyarados are better dragon dancers that are easier to set up and have more coverage and power (m-altarias eq is garbage, only its pixelate boosted return does good damage).

If it could actually get mileage out of its Flying-type STAB, you'd have a point, but relying on Dragon alone for STAB in modern OU is painfully underwhelming. It only outmuscles Altaria's Pixilate Return with Outrage, and has a much harder time setting up if Rocks are up.

Doesn't actually hit as hard with its STAB, has more painful weaknesses after Mega Evolving, can't abuse recovery.

Well duh, that's the gold standard of DD right there.

I really must disagree with you on the ease of setup bit. Mega Altaria is one of the few Pokemon that can be built to beat BOTH Mega Charizards reliably. Dragon/Fairy is a fantastic Defensive type combination, and Mega Altaria has just enough bulk and power to abuse it to the fullest. Note that none of the other three can pull off tricks like running Facade in order to bait and punish Burns.
