Bulbasaur lasted all the way through on my first playthrough. Charrizard's Fire Spin was kinda OP and I felt like a shit using it, so I switched to a Magmar after I got to Cinnabar. Blastoise didn't even make it through Erika. Got me a Gyarados and never looked back.
Gen 2: Feraligatr was a champ in game, and stayed with me the whole way through till I beat Red. Chicorita was replaced by Bellsprout and never saw level 10. Cindaquil was good, but got switched out for Growlithe around Olivine.
Gen 3:
Actually, they all were pretty damn good. I think I switched out Sceptile for Breloom on one run, but other than that, they all pulled their weight.
Gen 4:
Same as Gen 3, they were all pretty good and stuck around the whole way through. I think I swapped out Empoleon for Vaporeon at one point though.
Gen 5:
Boxed every last one of the bastards. Lilligant, Whimiscot, Maractus, and fucking Leavanny all outclass Serperior. Darmanitan is what Emboar wishes it could be. I took the goddamned monkey over Samurott before I got ahold of Jellicent.
Gen 6:
Gogoat is better than Chesnaught in game, but on one playthrough I did keep him around through the Elite Four. He isn't bad... there are just better Grass Types and he doesn't get a lot of fighting moves. Delphox is okay, but Gardevoir is better as a psychic type and Charmander is a better fire type. Greninja breaks the goddamn game. Benched it for Crawdaunt to keep from getting bored.
