Nintendo uses the remakes to test new features for their next handheld. Seeing as their isn't a full-fledged new handheld coming out soon (like GBA to DS or DS to 3DS) they don't have a gimmick to include this time.

There is the New 3DS but it's not a full-fledged new system, just an upgrade (like the Game Boy Color was to the original).

Exactly, the DS was still being developed when FRLG came out, same with the 3DS and HGSS.

Nintendo made the wireless adapter and Pokéwalker to test the water for features they wanted to add to their handhelds in development.

If wireless connectivity didn't work out, do you really think the DS would have been stripped of it? Do you really think there was enough time between the adapter and the DS to rewrite the structure of the system to that degree? DS may have debuted in December but it was a finished product well before that.
