X/Y were mostly about the gameplay alterations and 3D environments than about the story. But I do agree that it has some of the worst rivals to date.

It was pretty impressive how BW took the fight with the evil team all the way to the Pokemon League. XY had an E4 member that was part of the evil team, but that didn't really go anywhere.
