Games that are kind of similar get developed independently of one another, and then language reflects back on that by saying "let's call their game gook chess to make it more relatable to us."
Koma refer to all the pieces. It doesn't have the same connotation as "pawn" as an underling that gets sacrificed or controlled.
The line is clearly based on Kaijin, with motifs being sharp weaponry and Japanese style armor. The Dark type comes from the villainy in the films. At best, the inclusion of the name of a board game piece was a throwaway part of the name that localization latched onto because it's the only thing that make sense in our culture.
