First you get a Kalos starter.

Then you get a Kanto starter.

Then when you beat the game you get another Kalos starter.

Then you end up getting tons of starters in friend safaris.

And if you bought the game when it was first released, they threw a free Torchic at you, too.

Bought on launch with brand new 3ds
Team was Torchic, Fennekin, Charmander, eevee that became sylveon and pikachu

Game seems pretty cool, but it takes a long time to soft reset to get the right nature and ability for the starter though

The friend safari system more or less eliminated the need for that, since you can just catch wild starters in the post-game.

X and Y are absolutely great for a new player because it has 450 pokemon in the normal game. You get to see so many new pokemon.
