A lot of people whined to the high heavens about Gates, but to Gates' credit, it at least had the first good story in pokemon which is more than what I can say for Sky (special episodes were pretty decent though, especially the second and last one) and especially for Rescue Team.
As I'm in a tiny minority who thinks that Gates is the best (I'd take the move levelling/paradise/better story/v-wave/mysteriosity feature over more content any day), I'd say the safest bet is Sky. Don't waste your time with Rescue Team, Sky's better than it in every single way
