I remember unsuccessfully trying to hide the fact I was playing Ruby, Fire Red, and Emerald back in High School and later finding out I really didn't need to. For some reason at ages 14-18 it was "uncool" to be playing Pokemon, but I luckily never got made fun of for it.
It really did hit at the right time at the right age for me, they really pushed the "all trainers start their journey at age 10" thing in various materials so it really couldn't have had better timing.
