Rotom seemed to be pretty common when I was playing around on the ladder, so I used draco meteor instead. But yes, a standard dd set should have one or the other.

Most sub sets either only have return or return/eq, it seems. Fire blast is an optional thing, not something every mence carries at all.

That depends on the specific sub salamence set though, hell some of those only use 96+ atk evs, or even no atk investment, and I don't think they're maxed very often if ever. Even with a 252+atk mega Salamence against mandi's foul play and no hp or def investment for Salamence it's only a 26% chance to 2hko. Who the fuck would actually use a sub set without any kind of defensive investment and maxed attack, I don't know, but you would have most likely lost had he had a decent salamence set and didn't sub like a moron.

Game isn't even out yet.
Who knows what kinds of balance changes appeared from the Demo to the final. Or what other undiscovered megas might check or counter M-Mence.
Plus, at the end of the day singles is meant for story mode and casual play. GF considers competitive to be doubles, and designs for that.
My little sister loves sky battles but founds some balance issues with sky battles. Maybe you and her can write Mr. Nintendo about your balance issues of their casual formats.

You setup Stealth Rocks (mega salamance is WEAK to rocks), then get Weavile in your team.
You run mons with chance to burn stuff, so he must kill your pokemon or get rekt by burn. Ok there are no "counters", well it kills one pokemon, fair. Then you ice shard the shit out of it, done

if it switches out who cares, it will come back at half life, then you can kill it with priority (and this meta is ALL about priority, if you haven't realized)

In 6v6 singles you have nine maximum possible moves per turn. Five of these moves never change, and turn possibilities reduce as pokemon faint

In Chess you have an average of thirty possible moves per board configuration.

Guess which game has a hilariously higher skill ceiling than the other.

And in real time games, actions are done at points in time and can be done simultaneously.

tl;dr git gud is a shitty suggestion for a game with a skill ceiling as low as pokemon. Hell most people stuck in the low ladder are only there because their team sucks. Pretty much all 'skill' in pokemon is teambuilding

If they're designing for VGC, this means they're balancing pokemon based on a single format (4v4 doubles with a large portion of the nat' dex banned) that a tiny fraction of the playerbase actually participates in (travel hundreds of miles or more to go to official events, there isn't even a ladder on battlespot for this format they supposedly care so much for.)

It's not like it's hard to balance for doubles AND singles. It's easy: just don't give mega salamence freaking Aerialate holy shit. You honestly think that Gamefreak gets a free pass on making overpowered bullshit that shits up singles (this includes Battlespot singles, a format they support, seeing as they provide a ladder for it) with their only excuse being "yeah we don't care about that shit just play doubles LOL"?

The whole point of this thread has been about competitive pokemon. Playing with your friends isn't an officially competitive game environment. It's casual. Same with battle spot and online. There might be a ladder to battle spot, but it's not their officially recognized competitive tournament system.
Singles is popular here in America. But guess what? We aren't their primary demographic. For once in the world a company cares more about another country, Japan. Where doubles is popular and that's why gamefreak cares about it.
You wanna play singles? Great! All the power to you. But it's not what competitive pokemon is designed for. So stop complaining that singles is broken or GF doesn't know how to balance it, because they aren't even trying.

If you want a strict counter for a strict 1vs1 scenario, here it is.

>252+ Atk Aerilate Salamence Return vs. 252 HP / 168+ Def Cresselia: 175-207 (39.4 - 46.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
>252- SpA Salamence Draco Meteor vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Cresselia: 144-171 (32.4 - 38.5%) -- 98.7% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
>84 SpA Cresselia Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Salamence: 248-296 (74.9 - 89.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Cresselia hard counters the special set without any investment whatsoever. Then, it places physical Salamence in a really tight spot. You have Twave, Moonlight, Ice Beam, and something that P2 wishes it had: lefties recovery. Salamence can't gamble AT ALL. If Salamence used DD before you switched in, it shits itself in fear because it needs to predict if you're going to use Twave or Ice Beam. If it subs and you use Ice Beam, it loses next turn. If it uses Return and you use Twave, then it's as good as dead. It can't brute force through you with mixed sets or prior damage. It can't fuck around with Roost. It can't choose a niche move to beat you. Also, Salamence will ALWAYS lose to you if it received any prior damage (like SR).

But of course, in a REAL scenario, they're just going to switch out and bring their dedicated pursuit trapper to rape you lol

maybe if gamefreak really wants people to treat doubles more seriously they shouldn't make 99% of the game content singles. you can't just expect people not to bitch about competitive singles if that's what people experience in the games and therefore assume that's what the competitive default is. don't want to balance it (though for what it's worth, this claim is bullshit anyways)? then ditch it.

In all honesty though it looks like salamence will be banned from smogon ou while battle spot will be full of ubers anyway because of people using their primals. If you want rating 3vs3 then that is your choice to suffer.
So your best defensive counter to salamence would be lugia or whatever arceus form you like.
