Various pokemon can also act as mounts. Arcanine can carry you over land, Lapras swims on the ocean, Gyarados does both because fuck yeah. Flying pokemon work as well (Only larger mons though, Pidgey ain't gonna carry jack).
People build towns and routes like the games and are in the process of setting up gyms and a league.
After installing, you sign on, recieve one starter from gen 1-5, and are dumped in the starting town. From there you can do what the fuck ever you want.

The lag might be on your end because you load it all for the first time or something. Try hitting F3 and look at the top right. If it says it's using 99-100% of the memory, you just need to allocate more via a java argument in the launcher.
