That they got into a huge hissyfit when BW2 proved it wrong just underlined the kind of stupidity this mentality engenders. The whole "Gengar is Clefable's Ghost" or "Ditto is a failed Mew clone" or "Venomoth and Butterfree got switched accidentally in development" are interesting/amusing ideas, as fan theories, and maybe even as way to add more "deepest lore" if you're into that.
But acting like this stuff is anything more than a different way to look at canon is pointless, and engenders a kind of myopic blindness when actually dealing with the game canon itself.
